The Rancor is a fictional creature from the Star Wars universe, specifically the film Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi. It is a large, reptilian beast with immense strength and sharp claws.
In the film, Luke Skywalker encounters a Rancor in the pit beneath Jabba the Hutt's palace on Tatooine. Jabba uses the creature to execute those who displease him, dropping them into the pit to be devoured.
The Rancor seen in Return of the Jedi, whose name is Pateesa, is depicted as a somewhat docile and emotional creature in supplementary material. It has a handler, Malakili, who is visibly distraught when Luke kills the Rancor in self-defense.
Rancors are native to the planet Dathomir, known for its dangerous creatures and Force-sensitive witches. They are predators but can also be trained and used as beasts of burden or war mounts.
