Oberyn Martell, nicknamed the "Red Viper," was a Prince of Dorne and younger brother to Doran Martell, the ruling Prince. He was known for his fiery temper, charisma, and martial prowess, particularly his skill with a spear and his knowledge of poisons.

Oberyn traveled extensively throughout Essos, studying at the Citadel and allegedly even forming his own sellsword company. He was openly bisexual and had eight bastard daughters, collectively known as the Sand Snakes.

He arrived in King's Landing seeking revenge for the death of his sister, Elia Martell, and her children during the Sack of King's Landing, a crime he attributed to Gregor Clegane. He served as Tyrion Lannister's champion in a trial by combat against Clegane, aiming to expose the Lannisters' role in Elia's murder.

Despite initially dominating the fight, Oberyn's arrogance and desire for a confession led to his downfall. Clegane ultimately crushed Oberyn's skull, bringing a gruesome end to his quest for vengeance. His death significantly impacted the political landscape of Westeros and fueled his family's animosity toward the Lannisters.
