The Sole Survivor is the player character in the 2015 video game, Fallout 4. Their pre-War name and backstory are determined by the player, allowing for either a male or female protagonist. Before the Great War of 2077, they lived in Sanctuary Hills, Massachusetts, with their spouse and infant son, Shaun.

Their life was irrevocably changed when they sought refuge in Vault 111 during the nuclear attacks. Subjected to cryogenic stasis, they were awakened briefly to witness the murder of their spouse and the abduction of their son before being re-frozen.

Awakening again decades later, the Sole Survivor emerges from the Vault into the post-apocalyptic Commonwealth, driven by the singular goal of finding Shaun. This quest puts them at odds with various factions, including the Institute, a shadowy organization responsible for Shaun's abduction, as well as the Brotherhood of Steel, and the Railroad. Their choices throughout the game determine the fate of the Commonwealth and the future of humanity in the region.
