The Witch-king of Angmar is a prominent antagonist in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium, most notably in *The Lord of the Rings*. He first appears unnamed as the chief of the Nazgûl, or Ringwraiths, in *The Fellowship of the Ring*.
He was originally a great king of Men who was corrupted by one of the nine Rings of Power given to humans by Sauron. This corruption transformed him into a wraith, a powerful and terrifying servant of the Dark Lord.
As the Witch-king, he became the lord of Angmar, a realm in the north of Middle-earth, where he waged war against the kingdoms of Arnor. He is renowned for his power in battle, his mastery of dark magic, and the fear he inspires.
A prophecy states he will not be slain by any man. This ultimately comes to pass in the Battle of the Pelennor Fields when he is defeated by Éowyn with the help of Meriadoc Brandybuck.
