Prior to her addition, players exclusively controlled Steve. Alex was introduced on April 28, 2014, in version 1.8 of the game.
Alex presents as a female-coded character, with a slimmer build, longer red hair pulled into a ponytail, and lighter skin compared to Steve. Her addition aimed to offer players a choice in avatar appearance.
