Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Deng Ai was a prominent general of the Cao Wei state during the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history. Initially a minor official, his talent for strategy and terrain assessment led to a rapid rise through the ranks. He was noted for his innovative tactics, particularly his emphasis on swift maneuvers and unexpected attacks.

Deng Ai is most famous for his surprise attack on the Kingdom of Shu in 263 AD. He led his troops through treacherous mountain paths, a feat considered nearly impossible, bypassing the heavily defended Jian Ge pass. This unexpected maneuver forced the Shu general Jiang Wei to abandon his position and ultimately contributed to the fall of Shu Han.

Despite his military successes, Deng Ai's ambition and independent spirit ultimately led to his downfall. He was falsely accused of treason by Zhong Hui, a rival Wei general, and subsequently arrested. Both Deng Ai and his son were murdered in pursuit while being escorted to the Wei capital.
