Joseph Cooper, often referred to as "Coop," is the protagonist of Christopher Nolan's 2014 science fiction film, Interstellar. He is portrayed by Matthew McConaughey.
Cooper is a former NASA pilot and engineer who is living as a farmer in a dust-bowl ravaged future Earth. Widowed with two children, Tom and Murph, he struggles to provide for his family as food becomes scarce.
His skills and knowledge are eventually recognized by a remnant of NASA, leading to his recruitment for a perilous mission through a wormhole near Saturn. The goal of this mission is to find a habitable planet for humanity to evacuate to, offering a chance to escape Earth's dying ecosystem.
