Alma Madrigal, affectionately known as Abuela, is the matriarch of the Madrigal family in Disney's animated film, Encanto. She is the keeper of the magic candle that bestowed magical gifts upon her children and grandchildren, gifts used to serve and protect their community, Encanto.

Tragedy marked Alma's early life. She and her husband, Pedro, were forced to flee their home. Pedro sacrificed himself to protect Alma and other villagers, his death triggering the miracle of the Encanto and the creation of Casita, the Madrigal family's enchanted home.

Fueled by grief and a deep desire to never lose her family's safety, Abuela became fiercely protective of the miracle. She placed immense pressure on her family members to use their gifts to uphold the community's well-being, sometimes at the expense of their individual happiness. This led to strained relationships, particularly with her granddaughter Mirabel, who did not receive a gift.

Throughout the film, Abuela Alma undergoes a transformative journey, learning to relinquish control and prioritize her family's emotional well-being over the magic itself. She comes to understand that true strength lies not in magical gifts, but in love, connection, and embracing imperfections.
