Biography:
The "Miracle on Ice" team, officially the 1980 United States men's national ice hockey team, was a squad comprised primarily of amateur and collegiate players. Coached by Herb Brooks, the team was a massive underdog in the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, New York.
Prior to the games, they warmed up by participating in an exhibition series. They lost to the Soviets 10-3 at Madison Square Garden in February of 1980.
Their improbable journey began with a stunning 4-3 victory over the heavily favored Soviet Union, considered the world's top hockey team at the time. This game, broadcast during prime time in the United States, became an instant cultural phenomenon.
Two days later, they beat Finland, but it was their defeat of the Soviets that ensured their gold medal. The victory, fueled by youthful energy and disciplined play, captivated the nation and remains a celebrated moment in sports history.
