Carl Fredericksen is the protagonist of Disney/Pixar's animated film, Up. He is a widowed, elderly balloon salesman living in the house he shared with his late wife, Ellie.

Carl is known for his grumpy demeanor and reluctance to embrace change. He often wears a brown suit, spectacles, and uses a cane to assist with walking.

Driven by a lifelong dream shared with Ellie to visit Paradise Falls in South America, Carl decides to fulfill this promise after accidentally assaulting a construction worker threatening to take his house. He attaches thousands of helium balloons to his house, lifting it into the air for a journey south.

Accompanying Carl on his adventure are Russell, a young Wilderness Explorer; Dug, a talking golden retriever; and Kevin, a rare and colorful bird. Throughout the journey, Carl confronts his grief and learns the importance of connection and embracing new adventures, ultimately finding a new family.
