Joseph Pierce was a pivotal figure in the American Civil War, serving as a Brigadier General in the Union Army. Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, he initially pursued a career in business before the outbreak of hostilities.

With the onset of the Civil War, Pierce answered the call to service. He quickly rose through the ranks, demonstrating leadership and tactical acumen. He commanded the 1st Massachusetts Volunteers, participating in significant engagements such as the Battle of Big Bethel, one of the early battles of the war.

Pierce continued to lead troops in various campaigns, showcasing his ability to organize and effectively deploy his forces. His dedication and performance earned him a promotion to Brigadier General in 1862. Although he resigned from the army in 1863, his contributions to the Union cause were considerable, particularly in the formative stages of the conflict. After the war, he returned to civilian life.
