Rajesh Koothrappali, often referred to as Raj, is a fictional character in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory. Portrayed by Kunal Nayyar, Raj is an astrophysicist from New Delhi, India, working at Caltech.

A defining characteristic of Raj is his selective mutism. He is initially unable to speak to women unless under the influence of alcohol or certain medications.
