Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852), was a prominent British military commander and statesman. Born in Ireland, he rose to fame through his successful campaigns in India during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Wellington is best known for his pivotal role in the Napoleonic Wars. He commanded the allied forces that fought against Napoleon's French army in the Peninsular War (1808-1814), ultimately driving the French out of Spain and Portugal.
