Biography:
Brunswick Uhlan, also known as Frederick William, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, was a German nobleman and military officer. Born in 1771, he inherited the Duchy of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel in 1806.
A staunch opponent of Napoleon Bonaparte, Uhlan famously raised a volunteer corps known as the "Black Brunswickers" or "Schwarze Schar" in 1809. This unit, distinguished by its black uniforms, fought against French domination in various campaigns.
He led his troops with courage and distinction during the Napoleonic Wars, becoming a symbol of German resistance. Uhlan was killed in action at the Battle of Quatre Bras in 1815, just two days before the decisive Battle of Waterloo.
His death cemented his status as a military hero and a symbol of German patriotism in the 19th century. The legacy of the Black Brunswickers, with their somber uniforms and unwavering loyalty, continued to resonate in German military tradition for years to come.
