Donkey Kong is a video game character created by Nintendo. He first appeared in the 1981 arcade game, Donkey Kong.
Initially portrayed as an antagonist, the original Donkey Kong (now referred to as Cranky Kong) kidnaps Pauline, Mario's girlfriend, prompting Mario to rescue her.
A younger Donkey Kong, implied to be the original's grandson, later became the star of his own series, starting with Donkey Kong Country. This Donkey Kong is often depicted as a powerful but somewhat lazy ape, more closely resembling an orangutan in appearance than a gorilla.
He is also a recurring character in the Mario Kart series, often showcasing his strength and driving skills on the racetrack.
