The Ringwraiths, also known as the Nazgûl, are formidable antagonists in J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth legendarium. They first appear in The Fellowship of the Ring as shadowy figures relentlessly pursuing Frodo Baggins.
They were once powerful men, kings and sorcerers, seduced by Sauron and given Rings of Power. These Rings corrupted them, extending their lives but making them slaves to Sauron's will. They became wraiths, spectral figures bound to the One Ring.
Led by the Witch-king of Angmar, their primary purpose is to serve Sauron and retrieve the One Ring. They inspire terror and wield dark magic, making them a significant threat to the forces of good in the War of the Ring.
