Zhang Jiao, also known as the General of Heaven, was the leader of the Yellow Turban Rebellion in the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was a charismatic figure who claimed to be a follower of a Daoist sect known as the Way of Supreme Peace. He preached equality and promised healing to the suffering peasantry, attracting a massive following.

Zhang Jiao organized his followers into a disciplined and hierarchical structure. He and his brothers, Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang, led the rebellion, capitalizing on the widespread corruption and famine that plagued the Han empire. They donned yellow scarves, symbolizing their connection to the earth element and their belief in a new era.

The Yellow Turban Rebellion posed a significant threat to the Han government, exposing its weakness and sparking widespread unrest across the country. Although Zhang Jiao died of illness early in the rebellion, his movement continued under other leaders for several years. Ultimately, the rebellion was suppressed, but it greatly weakened the Han dynasty, paving the way for the rise of warlords and the subsequent Three Kingdoms period.
