Indiana Jones

Dr. René Belloq is a fictional character and the primary antagonist in the 1981 film, Raiders of the Lost Ark. He is a French archaeologist and rival to Indiana Jones. Belloq is portrayed as intellectually brilliant and highly skilled in archaeology, often mirroring Indy's own abilities, making him a formidable opponent.

However, unlike Jones, Belloq is amoral and opportunistic. He is willing to work with the Nazis, providing his expertise to help them locate the Ark of the Covenant. His motivations stem from a desire for knowledge and power, believing the Ark will grant him unparalleled abilities. He sees Indy as a constant obstacle to his ambitions, fueling their long-standing rivalry.

Belloq's ultimate demise occurs when the Ark is opened. He, along with the Nazi soldiers present, is consumed by the unleashed supernatural power, a consequence of his hubris and exploitation of sacred artifacts for personal gain. He is played by actor Paul Freeman.
