Lu Zhishen, a prominent character in the classic Chinese novel *Water Margin*, also known as *Outlaws of the Marsh*, is a formidable warrior-monk.
Originally named Lu Da, he was a military officer in the Weisheng Prefecture. His life took a dramatic turn after he killed a butcher to avenge a wronged woman. To escape punishment, he sought refuge in a Buddhist monastery on Mount Wutai, receiving the Buddhist name Zhishen, meaning "Wise Deep."
Despite his attempts at monastic life, Lu Zhishen struggled to adhere to Buddhist rules, particularly regarding alcohol and violence. He often engaged in drunken brawls and used his immense strength to defend the weak. After causing too much trouble at the monastery, he was sent to a different temple in Kaifeng to oversee a vegetable garden.
His exceptional martial skills and unwavering loyalty eventually led him to join the Liangshan outlaw band, where he became a powerful and respected leader. He is known for his immense strength, his use of a heavy monk's spade as a weapon, and his righteous, albeit often impulsive, nature. Lu Zhishen's story is one of redemption and finding purpose outside the confines of traditional society.
