Song Jiang, a pivotal character in the classic Chinese novel Water Margin (also known as Outlaws of the Marsh), is initially introduced as a minor county official in Yuncheng County, Shandong. Known for his righteous disposition and generous nature, he earns the nickname "Timely Rain" (及时雨) for his willingness to aid those in need.
His life takes a dramatic turn when he accidentally kills his mistress, Yan Poxi, after she threatens to expose his connection to the outlaw Liangshan bandits. To avoid execution, Song Jiang is forced to flee and eventually joins the outlaw band himself.
Over time, Song Jiang rises through the ranks to become the leader of the Liangshan outlaws. Under his command, the band grows in strength and notoriety, challenging the corrupt government and attracting numerous skilled warriors and strategists. He champions the motto "Carry out justice on behalf of Heaven."
Despite his outlaw status, Song Jiang maintains a strong sense of loyalty to the Song Dynasty Emperor. This loyalty ultimately leads him to accept amnesty from the government and lead the Liangshan forces on campaigns against foreign invaders. His story ends tragically, allegedly poisoned by corrupt officials after his military service.
