Biography:
Wei Yan was a general who served under Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the Three Kingdoms period of Chinese history, featured prominently in the historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Originally serving under Liu Biao in Jing Province, Wei Yan switched allegiance to Liu Bei after the Battle of Changban.
Known for his ambition and martial prowess, Wei Yan was appointed commander of Hanzhong after Liu Bei conquered it. He successfully defended the region against Cao Wei incursions for many years. Wei Yan was often portrayed as arrogant and independent, leading to friction with other Shu Han officials, particularly Yang Yi.
After Liu Bei's death, Wei Yan served under Zhuge Liang. Despite his contributions to the Northern Expeditions, Zhuge Liang harbored suspicions about Wei Yan's loyalty. Zhuge Liang secretly left instructions for his subordinates to eliminate Wei Yan should he disobey orders.
Following Zhuge Liang's death, Wei Yan refused to follow retreat orders, leading to accusations of treason. He was ultimately killed by Ma Dai, who was secretly ordered to do so by Yang Yi, fulfilling Zhuge Liang's contingency plan. Whether Wei Yan was truly a rebel or a victim of circumstance remains a subject of debate among historians and readers of the novel.
