The Merlion is a mythological creature and national personification of Singapore. It debuted as the mascot for the Singapore Tourism Board in 1964.

Its design combines the head of a lion with the body of a fish. The lion head represents Singapore's original name, Singapura, meaning "lion city" in Malay. The fish body symbolizes Singapore's origins as a fishing village known as Temasek, which means "sea town" in Javanese.

The Merlion is a popular tourist attraction in Singapore, with numerous statues of the creature located throughout the country, the most famous being the large Merlion statue at Merlion Park.
