Gilgamesh is a member of the Eternals, a race of ancient beings created by the Celestials to protect Earth from the Deviants. He is known as "The Forgotten One" due to his long periods of self-imposed exile and the erasure of his exploits from historical records, primarily at the behest of Zuras, the Eternals' leader.

Possessing immense strength and durability, Gilgamesh is considered one of the strongest Eternals. He distinguishes himself through his close combat prowess, relying on raw power rather than energy manipulation, though he can use cosmic energy to a limited extent. This fighting style often leads him to conflict with societal norms of the Eternals.

Throughout his long life, Gilgamesh has influenced human mythology, often being mistaken for or inspiring figures like the hero Gilgamesh of Mesopotamian legend, though the scope of his interaction with humanity has been carefully managed by Zuras. He has periodically emerged from isolation to aid Earth's heroes, notably as a member of the Avengers and later as an ally of other heroes like Hercules.

Gilgamesh is characterized by his stoicism and preference for solitude, yet harbors a strong sense of justice and a fierce loyalty to those he chooses to protect. His history is marked by both triumphs and tragedies, contributing to his complex and often solitary existence.
