Obelix is a fictional character in the Asterix comic book series, created by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo. One of the two main protagonists, along with Asterix, he is a loyal and kind-hearted, if somewhat simple-minded, friend.
He first appeared in the initial Asterix adventure, Asterix the Gaul in 1959. Obelix works as a menhir sculptor and deliveryman in his village, a small settlement of Gauls resisting Roman occupation in 50 BC.
What sets Obelix apart is that he fell into a cauldron of magic potion as a baby, granting him permanent superhuman strength. He is usually accompanied by his small dog, Idefix. Obelix's great love is hunting and eating wild boar, and he is comically sensitive about his weight, often reacting defensively to any remarks about it.
