He Who Remains, portrayed by Jonathan Majors in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is a character first appearing in the Loki TV show episode "For All Time. Always."
He is a variant of Nathaniel Richards. In the MCU he isn't a supervillain, but is depicted as an enigmatic being who created and oversaw the Time Variance Authority (TVA) to prevent multiversal wars caused by his other variants.
He Who Remains explained his origin, revealing that his variants discovered multiverse travel, initially leading to peaceful exchanges, but eventually culminating in a devastating conflict that nearly destroyed everything. To prevent this, he isolated the Sacred Timeline, creating the TVA to prune branches that could lead to another multiversal war.
