Zhang Liao, a prominent general in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, initially served under Lü Bu. He first appears in the novel during the battles against Cao Cao in Xu Province, around Chapter 11.
Following Lü Bu's defeat and execution at Xiapi, Zhang Liao was persuaded by Guan Yu to surrender to Cao Cao. Recognizing Zhang Liao's martial prowess and integrity, Cao Cao treated him with respect and valued his abilities.
Zhang Liao became renowned for his bravery and tactical acumen while serving under Cao Cao. His most celebrated achievement was the Battle of Xiaoyao Ford, where he decisively defended Hefei with a smaller force against Sun Quan's massive army, earning him widespread acclaim and striking fear into the hearts of the Wu forces.
