Biography:
Ma Chao, also known as Ma Mengqi, is a prominent character in Luo Guanzhong's historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*. He first appears in chapter 58, following the death of his father, Ma Teng.
Ma Chao was a renowned warrior from the Liang Province (present-day Gansu). Renowned for his martial prowess and striking appearance, he was often referred to as "Ma Chao the Splendid." He initially served as a general under his father, a regional warlord.
After Ma Teng was lured to the capital and assassinated by Cao Cao, Ma Chao rose in rebellion to avenge his father. He formed a coalition with Han Sui and other warlords to challenge Cao Cao's dominance. He fought Cao Cao at Tong Pass, nearly killing him in battle.
Despite initial successes, Ma Chao was ultimately defeated by Cao Cao's strategic brilliance. After further setbacks and internal conflicts, he eventually submitted to Liu Bei. He served Liu Bei in the establishment of the state of Shu Han, becoming one of the famed Five Tiger Generals, a testament to his martial skill.
