Cao Cao, a central figure in the historical novel *Romance of the Three Kingdoms*, first appears early in the narrative as a young officer involved in suppressing the Yellow Turban Rebellion. He is portrayed as a complex and ambitious character, often described as a brilliant strategist and cunning politician, but also as ruthless and tyrannical.

Historically based on the real Cao Cao, a powerful warlord and the penultimate founder of the Cao Wei dynasty, the novel's version emphasizes his pragmatism and willingness to use any means necessary to achieve his goals. While presented as a villain by some interpretations, his strategic genius and contributions to the reunification of China (albeit posthumously through his son) are undeniable within the context of the story.
