Richard Paul Astley, born February 6, 1966, in Newton-le-Willows, Lancashire, England, is a singer, songwriter, and musician best known for his 1987 debut single, "Never Gonna Give You Up."
Astley's career began as a drummer and singer in local bands. He was discovered by record producer Pete Waterman, who signed him to PWL Records. "Never Gonna Give You Up" became a global hit, topping charts in numerous countries.
His debut album, Whenever You Need Somebody, released in 1987, was also commercially successful. He followed with several more albums, including Hold Me in Your Arms and Free.
In recent years, Astley has experienced a resurgence in popularity, partly due to the "Rickrolling" internet meme, where users are tricked into watching the music video for "Never Gonna Give You Up." He continues to tour and release new music, most recently the album "Are We There Yet?" in 2023.
