John Spartan is a fictional character portrayed by Sylvester Stallone in the 1993 science fiction action film, Demolition Man.
Spartan, a Los Angeles Police Department sergeant known for his unorthodox and destructive methods, earns the nickname "Demolition Man" due to the collateral damage often associated with his crime-fighting.
In 1996, Spartan's attempt to apprehend Simon Phoenix, a ruthless criminal, results in the destruction of a building and the apparent deaths of hostages. Both Spartan and Phoenix are sentenced to cryogenic imprisonment.
Decades later, in the utopian society of 2032 San Angeles, Phoenix is thawed and escapes, wreaking havoc on a society unfamiliar with violence. Authorities, ill-equipped to deal with Phoenix, revive Spartan to recapture him.
Spartan finds himself a fish out of water, adjusting to the pacifistic and highly regulated future while battling the escaped Phoenix. He teams up with Lieutenant Lenina Huxley to restore order and prevent Phoenix's destructive plans.
