Shadow the Hedgehog is a fictional character appearing in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog video game franchise. He first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001) as a rival to Sonic.
Created by Professor Gerald Robotnik as the "Ultimate Life Form," Shadow was intended to be a cure for his granddaughter Maria's illness. His DNA was infused with that of Black Doom, an alien entity.
After being captured and placed in stasis by G.U.N., Shadow is awakened by Dr. Eggman in Sonic Adventure 2. Initially portrayed as a villain seeking revenge on humanity, his true motivations are complex and tied to a promise made to Maria before her death.
Shadow possesses similar abilities to Sonic, including super speed, but distinguishes himself with his use of Chaos Control, derived from a Chaos Emerald, which allows him to warp time and space. He is often depicted as brooding, independent, and dedicated to fulfilling his purpose.
