Wenwu, also known as The Mandarin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), is the complex and tragic central figure of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Unlike previous depictions in the MCU, this Mandarin is not a mere imposter but a powerful and ancient warrior.
Wenwu discovered the mystical Ten Rings, artifacts granting him immense power and virtual immortality. He used them to build a vast criminal empire known as the Ten Rings organization, shaping global events for centuries. Driven by a ruthless pursuit of power and control, his life was irrevocably altered after falling in love with Ying Li, a guardian of the mystical city of Ta Lo.
After Li's death, Wenwu returned to his criminal activities, training his son, Shang-Chi, as a deadly assassin. Ultimately, Wenwu was manipulated by the Dweller-in-Darkness, believing his wife was trapped in Ta Lo. This led to his death and Shang-Chi inheriting the Ten Rings. He first appeared in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, marking a significant reimagining of the Mandarin character for the MCU.
