Maxwell Lord is a complex and often villainous figure within the DC Universe, primarily known for his business acumen and manipulative tendencies. He initially presented himself as a benefactor to the Justice League International, using his wealth and charisma to fund and manage the team, fostering a public image of a responsible, civilian oversight.

However, Lord's true motivations were far more sinister. He harbored a deep distrust of metahumans and sought to control them, believing they posed a threat to humanity. This led him to orchestrate events that would allow him to manipulate the Justice League and ultimately, take control of Checkmate, a clandestine intelligence agency.

Lord eventually gained psychic abilities, further amplifying his capacity for manipulation and control. His actions culminated in him taking control of Superman, turning him into a weapon against the world. Wonder Woman was forced to kill Lord to break his control, a controversial decision that deeply impacted her reputation.

Despite his death, Maxwell Lord has returned on multiple occasions, often retaining his manipulative nature and anti-metahuman agenda. He remains a significant antagonist, representing the dangers of unchecked power and the corruption that can stem from fear and control.
