Biography:
Krampus is a horned, anthropomorphic figure in Alpine folklore who punishes children during the Christmas season who have misbehaved, in contrast with Saint Nicholas, who rewards the well-behaved.
His origins are somewhat obscure, possibly pre-Christian, and he is considered part of regional celebrations involving costumes and traditions, especially in Alpine countries like Austria, Germany, and Hungary. Krampus is often depicted as a demonic creature with horns, dark fur, and a long tongue. He carries chains, bells, and a bundle of birch branches (ruten) used to swat children. Sometimes he is shown carrying a sack or basket to carry away the particularly naughty ones.
While Krampus has roots in folklore, he has become a popular subject in modern entertainment. His first appearance in modern media of note was the film titled Krampus. In this movie he is a large demon like creature, summoning other creatures that attack disobedient children. The film helped popularized his modern day image.
