Biography:
Adam Yauch, known professionally as MCA, was a founding member of the influential hip-hop group, the Beastie Boys.
Born August 5, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York, Yauch was integral to the band's formation in 1981, initially as a hardcore punk band that transitioned to hip-hop. He played bass guitar and provided vocals, becoming known for his distinctive deep voice and socially conscious lyrics.
Beyond his musical contributions, Yauch was a film director under the pseudonym Nathanial Hörnblowér. He directed several Beastie Boys music videos and concert films. He was also a staunch advocate for Tibetan independence and organized the Tibetan Freedom Concerts in the late 1990s.
Yauch was diagnosed with cancer in 2009 and passed away on May 4, 2012. His death marked the end of the Beastie Boys, as the remaining members decided not to continue without him. His influence on music and activism continues to be felt.
