Thomas Eugene "Tom" Paris is a fictional character in the science fiction television series, Star Trek: Voyager. Played by actor Robert Duncan McNeill, Tom is introduced in the pilot episode, "Caretaker," as a former Starfleet lieutenant with a troubled past.
Paris was dishonorably discharged from Starfleet for covering up his involvement in an incident that resulted in the death of fellow officers. His expertise as a pilot, however, led Captain Kathryn Janeway to recruit him as an observer for the U.S.S. Voyager's mission to track down a Maquis ship. This act of redemption earned him reinstatement at the rank of Lieutenant.
Throughout Voyager's seven seasons, Paris evolves from a rebellious and somewhat immature figure into a responsible and respected member of the crew. He is skilled in holographic programming, often creating elaborate simulations, and he develops a romantic relationship with B'Elanna Torres, eventually marrying her and having a daughter named Miral.
Tom's personality is often marked by a lightheartedness that contrasts with the ship's often grim circumstances, but he proves to be a dedicated officer and friend, ultimately redeeming himself and earning his place within Starfleet once more.
