Chakotay is a fictional character in the science fiction television series Star Trek: Voyager, portrayed by actor Robert Beltran. He is a Native American of the Rubber Tree people, a fictional tribe from Central America.

Before joining the USS Voyager crew, Chakotay was a Starfleet officer who resigned his commission to join the Maquis, a rebellious group fighting the Cardassians to protect Federation colonists in the Demilitarized Zone. He became the captain of the Maquis raider ship, the Val Jean.

Chakotay and his crew were pulled across the galaxy to the Delta Quadrant along with the USS Voyager by the Caretaker. Stranded 70,000 light-years from home, Chakotay and Captain Kathryn Janeway forged an uneasy alliance, merging their crews to form a single unit for the long journey back to the Alpha Quadrant.

Throughout the series, Chakotay serves as Voyager's First Officer, providing a calm and spiritual counterpoint to Janeway's more pragmatic leadership. He often utilizes his Native American beliefs and values to guide his decisions and offer counsel to his crewmates. He is a skilled tactician and pilot, and develops a close working relationship and eventual romantic relationship with Captain Janeway.
