Darth Trenebrous was a Dark Lord of the Sith who lived millennia before the Galactic Republic, during the era of the Old Sith Wars. A master strategist and philosopher, Trenebrous dedicated his life to unraveling the mysteries of the Force, particularly its dark side. He believed the Sith should strive for ultimate power through knowledge and cunning, rather than brute force.

Trenebrous sought to perfect the Sith's ability to cheat death. He envisioned transferring one's consciousness into another being, essentially achieving immortality. His research was meticulous and largely focused on understanding and manipulating midi-chlorians, the microscopic life-forms that mediated the Force.

His most significant contribution was his concept of the "Darth Bane Rule of Two," though this was not a formalized decree by Trenebrous himself. His teachings, focused on the inherent instability of large Sith organizations, influenced his apprentice Darth Tenebrous, who in turn passed on the philosophy that ultimately led to Bane establishing the Rule. While he did not directly create the Rule of Two, his legacy paved the way for its implementation and the Sith's eventual rise to power.
