Calvin Rankin, better known as Mimic, is a complex figure in the Marvel Universe. He debuted in X-Men #19 (1966) as a villain before later becoming a reluctant hero.

Rankin's mutant ability allows him to mimic the powers and skills of any mutant within a certain radius. Initially, he permanently absorbed the powers of the original X-Men: Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast, and Angel. This made him incredibly powerful, but also unstable.

His time with the X-Men was brief and tumultuous, marked by arrogance and difficulty controlling his borrowed abilities. Eventually, he lost his Mimic powers. He has since regained and lost them multiple times.

Throughout his history, Mimic has been affiliated with various teams and organizations, often finding himself caught between heroic ideals and self-serving ambition. His character development has been inconsistent, portraying him as both a troubled individual striving for redemption and a power-hungry opportunist.
