Shinji Ikari is the reluctant protagonist of the acclaimed anime series Neon Genesis Evangelion. He is a shy and emotionally withdrawn teenager summoned by his estranged father, Gendo Ikari, to pilot a giant bio-machine called an Evangelion (EVA) to defend humanity against monstrous beings known as Angels.
Haunted by his mother's death and his father's emotional neglect, Shinji struggles immensely with the immense pressure and responsibility placed upon him. He is often seen battling inner demons and grappling with feelings of inadequacy, isolation, and self-worth. His psychological state deteriorates throughout the series as he confronts increasingly traumatic experiences both within and outside of EVA combat.
Despite his initial reluctance and self-doubt, Shinji demonstrates considerable skill as an EVA pilot.
