Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin is a prominent character in the Star Wars Original Trilogy, specifically Episode IV: A New Hope. He is a high-ranking officer in the Galactic Empire, known for his ruthlessness and unwavering dedication to maintaining order through fear and oppression.
Tarkin's first appearance is in Star Wars: Episode IV - A New Hope. As Grand Moff, he commands the Death Star, the Empire's planet-destroying superweapon. He uses it to demonstrate the Empire's power, most notably by destroying the planet Alderaan. He believes fear of the Death Star will keep the galaxy in line.
Tarkin is ultimately responsible for the security flaws that allow the Rebel Alliance to destroy the Death Star. He dies when the battle station explodes, a victim of his own overconfidence and the Rebellion's courage.
