Clayface is a shapeshifting villain from the DC Comics universe. While several characters have used the name, the most well-known iteration is Basil Karlo.
Basil Karlo, the original Clayface, first appeared in *Detective Comics* #40 (June 1940). Karlo was an actor enraged at being replaced in a remake of a horror movie he starred in. He dons the mask of Clayface, a character he previously portrayed, and begins murdering the new cast and crew.
While Karlo remains a recurring character, the Clayface mantle has been taken up by others, including Matt Hagen, who gained his powers through exposure to a protoplasm; Preston Payne, a scientist; and Sondra Fuller, a member of a terrorist group.
