Biography:
Michael Collins, born in Rome in 1930, was an American astronaut, test pilot, and U.S. Air Force major general.
He is most famous for being the command module pilot for the Apollo 11 mission in 1969. While Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the Moon, Collins remained in lunar orbit aboard the command module Columbia.
Prior to Apollo 11, Collins flew in space as the pilot of Gemini 10 in 1966, where he performed two spacewalks.
After leaving NASA, Collins served as Assistant Secretary of State for Public Affairs and later as Director of the National Air and Space Museum. He authored several books, including his autobiography, Carrying the Fire. He died in 2021.
