Benjen Stark was the youngest brother of Eddard Stark, Lord of Winterfell, and served as a First Ranger of the Night's Watch. He was a respected and skilled ranger, known for his dedication to his duties protecting the realm from threats beyond the Wall.

Prior to the series' main events, Benjen joined the Night's Watch, forgoing any claim to Winterfell and familial responsibilities. The reasons for this commitment are hinted at but never explicitly stated, leaving room for speculation. He took his vows seriously, embodying the Watch's dedication to celibacy and service.

Benjen disappears while on ranging expeditions beyond the Wall early in the series. He later reappears, drastically changed, having been saved from death by the Children of the Forest. They prevented his transformation into a wight by inserting dragonglass into his heart, creating a being somewhere between the living and the dead.

This altered state allowed him to assist Jon Snow and Bran Stark at crucial moments, guiding them towards their destinies. Ultimately, he sacrifices himself to allow Jon to escape from wights, ensuring the Lord Commander's survival and the fight against the Night King.
