Ser Barristan Selmy, often called "Barristan the Bold," was a legendary knight from House Selmy and a prominent figure in Westeros. Renowned for his unparalleled skill in combat, he served as a knight of the Kingsguard for several Targaryen and Baratheon kings, beginning under Aegon V Targaryen.

He earned considerable fame for his bravery during the War of the Ninepenny Kings, where he slew the monstrous Maelys the Monstrous, ending the Blackfyre rebellion. He continued to serve with distinction under Jaehaerys II and Aerys II Targaryen, including during the Defiance of Duskendale.

Barristan was present at the Tower of Joy and later pardoned by Robert Baratheon, who named him Lord Commander of the Kingsguard. He served loyally for many years until dismissed by Joffrey Baratheon, prompting him to flee King's Landing.

Saddened by the corruption and disarray in Westeros, Barristan traveled to Essos and pledged his sword to Daenerys Targaryen, serving as her trusted advisor and commander of her Queensguard. He ultimately died fighting the Sons of the Harpy in Meereen, defending Daenerys' claim.
