Credence Barebone first appears in the film Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. He is a young, troubled individual living in New York City in the 1920s.
Credence is the adopted son of Mary Lou Barebone, the leader of the New Salem Philanthropic Society, a group dedicated to hunting down and exposing witches and wizards. He is subjected to severe abuse and repression by Mary Lou, which has devastating consequences.
Due to the intense suppression of his magical abilities, Credence becomes an Obscurus, a dark and unstable parasitic force that manifests within a young witch or wizard who has repressed their magic. The Obscurus grants him immense destructive power, making him a danger to himself and others.
