Biography:
Bob Ross was an American painter, art instructor, and television personality. Born in Daytona Beach, Florida, on October 29, 1942, he is best known as the creator and host of The Joy of Painting, a television program that aired on PBS from 1983 to 1994.
Ross developed his signature wet-on-wet oil painting technique, which allowed him to create complete paintings in under 30 minutes. His calm and encouraging demeanor, coupled with his permed afro and soothing voice, made him a beloved figure in popular culture.
Prior to his television career, Ross served in the United States Air Force for 20 years, where he rose to the rank of Master Sergeant. It was during his time in the Air Force that he began painting and developing his unique style. He passed away on July 4, 1995, at the age of 52, due to lymphoma, but his legacy as an accessible and inspiring art instructor continues to this day.
