Gargamel is the primary antagonist in The Smurfs franchise, known primarily from the Hanna-Barbera animated TV show.
He is a comically inept and perpetually unsuccessful wizard whose main goal is to capture the Smurfs. His motivations vary, sometimes driven by a desire to eat them, other times to use them as an ingredient in alchemical formulas to create gold or achieve immortality. Gargamel lives in a dilapidated shack in the forest with his equally inept and often mistreated cat, Azrael.
Gargamel's first appearance in the animated TV show was in 1981, the first episode of the series titled "The Smurfs and the Magic Flute". He is voiced by Paul Winchell in the original series.
