Erwin Rommel (1891-1944) was a highly decorated German field marshal during World War II. His military career began in World War I where he earned the Pour le Mérite for his actions on the Italian Front.
Rommel rose to prominence during the invasion of France in 1940, commanding the 7th Panzer Division with speed and decisiveness. This earned him the nickname "The Desert Fox" due to his successes leading Axis forces in North Africa.
His tactical brilliance and daring maneuvers initially inflicted significant defeats on British forces. Despite facing logistical challenges and Allied air superiority, he maintained a reputation as a formidable opponent. His campaigns eventually ended in defeat at El Alamein.
Later in the war, Rommel was involved in the defense of Normandy against the Allied invasion. Implicated in the July 20 plot to assassinate Hitler, he was given the choice of public trial or suicide to protect his family and reputation. He chose suicide.
