Paul Pierre Duval, better known as the Gray Gargoyle, is a Marvel Comics supervillain first appearing in Journey into Mystery #107 (1964). A French chemist, Duval gained his petrifying powers accidentally.
While attempting to create a synthetic stone, Duval exposed himself to an unknown chemical compound. This exposure transformed his skin into a granite-like substance, granting him the ability to transmute anything he touches into stone. The effect is permanent unless the Gargoyle wills it to be reversed.
The Gray Gargoyle has faced numerous Marvel heroes, most notably Thor and the Avengers, often as a henchman or member of larger villainous groups. He is generally portrayed as a physically imposing foe with a single-minded focus on using his abilities for personal gain or destruction.
